IN response to Coun Keith Orrell's letter (March 13), one wonders how and why the City of York Council was and probably still is paying an entrepreneurial rate salary to an official with responsibilities for the Barbican and the loss made of £750,000 per year.

I am an officer of a York-based social club and four years ago we were forced to seek a new home for our annual show due to the refurbishment of the Merchant Adventurers' Hall.

The Barbican was then a possible candidate. The prices quoted were exorbitant, the restrictions unacceptable and the guarantees worthless.

Instead we opted for the Knavesmire Stand of York Racecourse. In the intervening years, our annual event has become the largest one-day event of its kind outside of London and we are still expanding.

I wonder just how many more local events the Barbican lost through a less-than-dynamic management causing the £750,000 loss, and why the entrepreneurial salary is paid to someone for whom it is clearly inappropriate?
