MR Howden would appear to be very happy that the transfer of the Selby council houses didn't go through (Letters, March 13).

It is okay for him, as he has had the "decent homes work" completed on his home.

The next time that the council carry out the work on the Abbots Road Estate the other people won't be as lucky. They will not get a kitchen and a bathroom and flooring all done. They will be lucky to get one or the other of them done. He can argue as much as he likes, but as a member of the major works group fighting hard to get things done for tenants, I am aware of the problem facing the council.

It was interesting that Mr Howden's previous letter to this paper stated that the "decent homes work" completed on his home was rubbish, yet he appears to want that lower standard to continue for other tenants by having voted no.

Is Mr Howden still happy for the Government to take £2.6 million of our rent money each year, as will be the case for having voted no? More than £7 million has been given back to the Government over the last three years.

As a tenant, I am really worried we will get less spent on our homes and the environment. I hope Mr Howden comes forward and works with other tenants along with the council and experiences the real problems that face housing, and does not just commentate from the side lines.

Mrs Jean Allerton,

Hardy Street,

Selby.
