YORK athlete Colin Shafto burst through more than one barrier on his way to gold in the M70 pentathlon at the British Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The 71-year-old Nestl Rowntree competitor completed his first multi-event in years after a long-term injury that forced him into racewalking, and then broke two United Kingdom records en route to the title.
Shafto led from the start with an 11.26-second run in the 60-metre hurdles followed by a leap of 4.02 metres in the long jump and an impressive 9.17m in the shot.
Record number one came in the high jump as Shafto topped the former best by 12 centimetres with his 1.38 metres effort.
He then wrapped it all up with a 1,000m run in 4min 23.81secs to gather an overall points total of 3,648, beating the old record held by runner-up David Burton by 588 points.
