ANDY Bishop has finally won the official Football Conference player of the month award after months of nominations.

The 18-goal joint league top-scorer received 52 per cent of the vote on the official Conference website to claim the prize.

Pleased manager Billy McEwan said: "It's very good news for everybody at the club - it's good for Andy, good for the club and good for the fans.

"He will be the first to admit though that he's got to keep his form up and keep scoring goals.

"I'm pleased for him but I am sure he will be pleased for the team as well. To be fair, he's put the chances away but it's all about team work at York City."

Hereford's Andy Williams was the biggest threat with 29 per cent, with John Grant of Halifax Town (12 per cent), George Boyd (Stevenage Borough, 4 per cent) and Paul Mullin (Accrington Stanley, 4 per cent) also in the running.

It means a February double for the club, boss Billy McEwan having already been presented with the top manager award.

McEwan added: "It's good for the club to get both. It means we are doing something right but hopefully we will have more to celebrate in the future."

Former York City midfielder Lev Yalcin has signed for UniBond League premier division side Whitby Town.

The 20-year-old former Turkish youth international has joined ex-team-mate and top scorer Aaron Wilford at Whitby after being released by York. Saturday's league match at Wakefield-Emley could mark his debut.
