ON picking up my copy of the Evening Press I was greeted by a front cover picture of yet another member of yet another of Selby's political parties waxing lyrical about the notorious accident blackspot that is the A19/A63 junction (March 8).

When, I wonder, are these pillars of the community going to cease playing "anything you can do, I can do better" and start doing something more constructive?

This particular pillar of the community appears to have a problem with her "sat nav" system or she would be aware the aforementioned junction is in fact at Barlby, which is well served by local government of its own under an assortment of political persuasions.

Speaking as a professional driver, I have seen more than my share of local authority short-sightedness and road planning disasters.

Local residents to the A19/A63 junction asked for a roundabout from day one, only to be told it was too near another one. In the fullness of time one goes in nearer still and we plan to feed another bypass into a roundabout that is more akin to a theme park exhibit than an example of civil engineering.

Alter the junction and be finished with it and, rightly or wrongly, the ratepayer lives with the results. John A Eastwood,
