RECENTLY the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, tried to encourage us all to wrap ourselves in the Union Flag and be "British" - but what does that mean now?
As far as I can see it means: driving to an Irish pub, in a German car to then stop on the way home for an Indian takeaway or a Turkish kebab meal; on arriving at home to sit down on Swedish furniture, drink Belgian beer while nibbling on Dutch cheese and Danish pastries, while watching an American film on a Japanese television.
What is the most British thing of all? Being suspicious of anything foreign!
I most certainly do not consider myself British - the term is now so grossly tarnished - I am English, just as passionately as Brown is a Scot!
