It was a chance encounter in a pub with a friend who had a "shady military background" that started Pat Monteath on the road to being a thriller writer.
The friend's confessions offered Pat a "tantalising glimpse into the... murky morality of the politics and savage violence of Northern Ireland". Years later, the former MoD worker, now living with his wife Anne on the edge of the North York Moors near Whitby, penned his first thriller, Who Pays The Ferryman - a spy thriller set during the Troubles.
Operation Orpheus is the sequel. Newly-recruited spy Richard James is ordered to Ireland by the British Government - where he is told to await further instructions. He quickly becomes enmeshed in the dangerous, shady world of gun runners, terrorists and British Intelligence - and realises it is not only the IRA who are the enemy.
