HEALTH bosses in York have welcomed the Government's total ban on smoking in pubs, clubs and restaurants.

Rachel Johns, director of public health at Selby and York Primary Care Trust (PCT), said the decision by MPs to outlaw smoking demonstrated a "real commitment" to reducing tobacco use in public places.

Ms Johns said: "We're really pleased with the Commons vote, which demonstrates a real commitment to reducing smoking prevalence in public places.

"Smokers put themselves at greater risk of a number of health conditions including heart disease and cancer, and second-hand smoke can have just as serious consequences: your risk of heart disease is increased by a quarter if you're exposed to second-hand smoke."

The Evening Press reported yesterday how York MP Hugh Bayley and Selby MP John Grogan were part of a group leading the way in trying to stub out smoking in pubs and clubs.

MPs voted, by a huge majority in Parliament, to back a total ban - removing any possibility of an exemption for private members' clubs and pubs which do not serve food.

Mr Bayley said he was delighted that months of hard work had paid off, but working men's clubs in York branded the decision "ludicrous".

The PCT and the Evening Press teamed up last May to launch the Yes To Clean Air campaign, to stamp out smoking in the workplace.

More than 50 companies have pledged to stub out smoking, and the campaign has attracted support from organisations such as North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Kevin Booth, the editor of the Evening Press, also welcomed news of the ban.

He said: "Through our Yes To Clean Air campaign, we have helped our part of North Yorkshire stay ahead of the field in addressing this vital public health concern.

"I'm delighted that York and the rest of the country will soon be enjoying clean air."

Ms Johns said: "This ban can be the catalyst for smokers to quit, with the support and advice of the North Yorkshire Stop Smoking Service.

"The service runs group courses so smokers can get help, based on their individual needs, but with the support of others who are also trying to give up.

"If you're interested, then please give them a call on 01904 663310."
