JOHN Prescott's proposal for a North East Regional Assembly was thrown out in a referendum.
Following which, after having spent a great deal of money promoting it, there was no referendum held for a Yorkshire Assembly. The Deputy Prime Minister was convinced that if he held a referendum this would also be thrown out.
I would like to know what mandate does the Deputy Prime Minister have for setting up a Yorkshire and Humber Assembly (February 6)? What powers does this assembly have? Are the members of this assembly elected or unelected, and, if appointed, by whom? Are they paid and, if so, how much? What is the cost to us of this assembly and where is it?
It would seem to me that this assembly is yet another tier of government being introduced by the back door which we neither need nor want to dictate our daily lives.
