SOME of the York Indoor Bowls Club's top bowlers will be battling out in a new league in the next three months.

The invitation-only York IBC Champions Singles League is for past winners of the the club's singles competition.

Prize money of £600 from sponsors Rymers is up for grabs and the first batch of matches saw David Stroughair beat Carol Instone 22-6 and Frank Turner defeat Maureen Thomas 21-13 after being 8-4 down at one stage.

Melanie Brooke came back from 17-11 to see off Betty Richardson 21-17 and Eddie Howcroft beat Peter Littlewood 24-15 after winning the last four ends scoring ten shots.

The next round is being held on Sunday, January 29.

York's Ladies went out of the Vivienne Trophy at the Zone Final stage, losing 88-79 to Cumbria 88-79 on aggregate.

The damage was done between the fifth and tenth ends when they dropped 27 shots while only scoring 12.

The only winning rink came from Doreen Rodgers team who staged a magnificent fight back after being 14-8 down after ten. They scored a seven then only lost two more ends to win 33-18.

Anita Haw's team were tied at 11-11 with eight ends to play but slide to a 21-14 defeat.

Margaret Smith's four were involved in a tight game at Carlisle before losing 25-17 and Pat Bracken's team went down 24-15.

Yorkshire Under 25s continued their excellent run in the National Double Rink competition when they beat a strong Nottinghamshire side 40-29.

Paul Mosley's team at Thornaby included York's Paul Humphrey and won 23-11 while Michael Hick's side only went down by one shot 18-17 at Nottingham. Yorkshire now play Cambridgeshire, who beat last year's winners Leicestershire, in the semi-final at Gedling on March 5.

York 'A' maintained their unbeaten record in the Yorkshire Over 55s League division one with an 89-66 aggregate win against second-placed Featherstone to pick up 13 points.

Fred Clayden's romped home 31-8, while in the other home match Peter Littlewood's side came back after trailing 10-1 to draw 24-24.

Geoff Walker's quartet scored twos on the last two ends to win 19-18 at Featherstone and Frank Turner's team were pipped 16-15.

York 'A' now lead the league by 22 points with two games to play.

York's Under-18 side lost the county division one title they have held for the last four years as Thornaby 'A' beat them 26-23 at South Leeds.

Josh Cahill's side won 16-15 but Adam Liddell's rink went down 11-7 after he laid five shots with one wood to go. However, they got back to winning ways in their second game when they beat Hornsea 27-20 with Liddell winning 15-6. But Cahill lost 14-12 and York finished the campaign in third place.
