I AM writing regarding the guy who bought the domain names and is being banned from using them (Travel Agent's Olympic Plea To Tony Blair, January 12). Firstly let me ask how it was possible for a member of Joe Public to buy up these domain names if the Government was planning to ban their use?

When was it done? If they were purchased after the Olympic bid was given to London, then this just smacks of sour grapes by the Government or the Olympic committee not being organised enough to sort out possibly the largest avenue through which the global community will gain access to these games.

If it was done before London was chosen, then perhaps the Olympic committee should be offering Mr Smith a job instead of throwing a tantrum, as he clearly has more business sense and foresight than anyone working there.

Mr Smith should be allowed to use these domain names as he sees fit. If what he says is true, then the websites that will use these names will be honest, red-blooded entrepreneurialism at work, bringing business into national and local communities alike - certainly not an underhand attempt to sabotage the games.

If the Olympic committee is determined to stop Mr Smith then it might consider buying the names from him, naturally at a suitably inflated amount.
