DURING a recent visit to York, I was interested to read in your paper that a woman had been asked to leave a pub for smoking in the presence of her child.

At first I found myself in agreement with this firm action. On second thoughts, however, there is surely a simpler remedy for any publican who has the welfare of children at heart; it is to ban all children and all smokers from his premises.

This will not only protect the health of the children, it will earn the gratitude of all responsible drinkers.
