THE letter from Mr Muggeridge published in the Evening Press regarding the behaviour of the speed freaks in Poppleton (December 16) accurately expresses the views of most residents, particularly those who live next to the morning and evening "rat runs".

This problem is not new, but has been increasing month by month.

What amazes me is that the authorities, including the police and our local councillors, appear to have been ineffective in introducing any kind of remedial action. Are they blind, or impotent?

Speed restrictions etc are utterly useless unless steps are taken to enforce them regularly, and at random times.

It was also interesting to read the advice from a senior traffic police officer who wrote to your paper last week, stressing the importance of clear visibility from within a vehicle.

While I fully agree with his comments, I wonder whether he, or any of his officers, have travelled recently on the A59 or A1079 and have noticed how many of the illuminated signs on the traffic islands are almost completely invisible at this time of the year, as a result of an accumulation of dried-on muddy road spray?

Such signs are just waiting to be wiped out by an unsuspecting motorist, particularly in foggy conditions.

Why should I have to point out the obvious? Are the traffic officers who patrol our roads in serious need of eye tests?
