B QUIET. That's the message from York-based train operator GNER, which has changed the order of its train carriages to make the going a little easier for passengers.

The carriage lettering on all GNER trains - including the

electric Mallard trains and diesel High Speed Trains (HSTs) - has now been standardised to make it easier for passengers to find their coach.

For the first time, coaches B to F in standard class and M and L in first class are in the same position on all GNER trains.

And following passenger research, the quiet coach has moved from coach D to coach B - the first coach at the northern end of the train.

The company, based at Station Rise, hopes this will reduce

disturbance from passengers walking through the carriage, and as every train operates with this coach in place, will guarantee a quiet ride on every journey.

GNER is asking those who travel in coach B to show respect for other passengers by remembering:

To use all electronic

equipment quietly

No mobile phone calls. Switch your mobile to silent or discreet, and go to the vestibule at the end of the carriage to talk. Do not make a call in the quiet coach

Hold any conversations quietly and with respect for others.

The changes also mean there will now be more reservable seats throughout the train,

making advance booking easier.

Cyclists benefit too, as bike reservations will now receive an allocated place in the train's guard's van, which becomes coach A on HSTs (north end of train) or coach P on Mallards (south end of train).

The standard class wheelchair-accessible coach becomes coach F on both Mallards and HSTs, while in first class it remains in coach L.
