MANY residents in York have deep concerns about the appointment of Dr Sentamu as Archbishop of York.

I was appalled by the appointment.

Theologically, I do not think anyone can deny there were those much better qualified.

This was a politically correct decision - the job being given to a man who has been a bishop for only six years.

Since Dr Sentamu arrived in York, his behaviour has done nothing to change my mind.

Some people claim that too much fuss is being made of his decision to hold a picnic in the Minster on November 30.

The point is not that Marks & Spencer is supplying the food, the retailer is sponsoring the event.

Does not Dr Sentamu realise that Jesus threw the traders out of the temple?

What next? Advertising hordes on the Rose Window, encouraging folks to go for a McDonalds after the service?

Dr Sentamu has advertised for a chauffeur, which requires a five-page application form. Perhaps he has contacted Councillor Ann Reid and arranged for the traffic lights to turn green on his drive through York.

Apparently he also requires a "specialist" cook. Very grand for such a self-declared humble man.

Presumably Dr Sentamu agrees with the Archbishop of Canterbury, who said the teaching of Christian hymns by missionaries was not only wrong, but "sinful".

I despair for the Church of England, and especially for the Minster - my home church.
