THIS was the scene after a new bus driver accidentally crashed into railings while driving through busy York traffic.

Firefighters mopped up 60 litres of diesel which spilled on to the road after the accident at about 5.55pm on Saturday.

Lewis Outing, of York, sent us this picture to use on our new citizen journalist website www.myyorknews.com.

He spotted the accident on his way back from the York City match on Saturday.

Peter McCarthy, First's head of service delivery, said a new driver had been taking the single-decker bus, which was out of service, from Station Rise to the University of York.

He crashed into some railings as he turned right at the junction of Station Road and Leeman Road, and the bus ground to a halt.

Mr McCarthy said: "It so happened it was a brand new driver taking the out-of-service bus for us and he was looking at the traffic coming the other way, but not his right hand mirror and he hit the railings."

No passengers were on the bus at the time and the driver was uninjured.

The damaged bus was towed back to the depot to be repaired.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said firefighters had attended to deal with the diesel leakage after the crash.

Police directed traffic during the clean-up operation
