YORK'S Ladies moved into the second round of the Mason Trophy (English Women's Indoor Bowls Association Over 60's Double Rinks) when they easily beat Doncaster 52-34.

The damage was done in the first half as the home side led 42-10 after 12 ends. Linda Harrison's team scored a six on the ninth end to lead 18-5 in their 30-16 win, while Melanie Brooke's rink didn't win any of the last seven ends but still won 22-18.

York now play North Cave in the next round but won't be joined by New Earswick, who lost by two shots to Hornsea.

Lys Jerrum's four had done well to take a 15-14 lead on the 20th end with a single but then dropped a two to lose the game, while Margaret Moss's rink looked to be home and dry at 20-13 with four ends to play but lost the lot and the game 21-20.

York's Ladies had a good win in the newly-formed EWIBA Lingford Trophy, only open to Under-60s when they beat Cumbria 36-28.

Helen Walker's quartet scored 15 shots to only one against between the tenth and 15th ends to lead 18-8 and eventually won 23-13.

Carol Instone's team lost 15-13 but crucially won the last two ends scoring four shots when the game looked to be getting tight.

York's Under 18s had a mixed start to their league campaign.

They beat South Leeds 33-18 with Adam Liddell's rink winning 21-3.

That saw them pick up four points but they lost 33-22 to Thornaby 'A' with Josh Cahill's team just losing 15-14.

York play Blackpool Newton Hall in the Denny Cup third round on Saturday while New Earswick play Doncaster in the Denny Plate. Both games start at noon.
