THIS is the artist's impression of the festive ice rink sliding its way to York this Christmas.

Labelled The Ice Factor by organisers, the rink will be set up in a picturesque 600-square metre area round the illuminated oak tree in the Eye of York.

Other features will include a viewing area, and heated caf/bar and skate hire marquees.

The arrival of the ice rink will be Christmas music to the ears of hundreds of families disappointed when last year's event was cancelled.

The year before, in December 2003, the skating attraction at the Eye of York unexpectedly closed on Christmas Eve when Aria, the company in charge of that rink, suffered problems.

Rockin' Horse Promotions, a York-based events management company, stepped in to save it.

This year's Ice Factor, which is sponsored by Fenwick's department store, will be open daily from November 26 until January 8.

There will be guest appearances from The Imperial Ice Stars world-class figure skaters, who are currently on a world tour with their production of The Sleeping Beauty On Ice. The Ice Factor is produced by Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, Tony Mercer and the Local Radio Company.

James Cundall, chief executive of Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, said: "We are thrilled to be creating a high-quality ice rink in this picturesque and historic setting.

"I am confident that The Ice Factor will be the talked-about event of the Christmas season in York, appealing to families, school groups, office parties and people of all ages."

James Fenwick, managing director of Fenwick's department store, said: "We are really pleased to be sponsoring The Ice Factor, offering a festive treat to all."

Liz Topi, events officer for City of York Council, said: "The arrival of the ice rink is a dream come true. This facility is going to be so fantastic for York over the festive period and I am sure that the people of York as well as visitors will get an enormous thrill skating in this location."

Tickets cost £7.50 for adults and £5.50 for children, and include free skate hire. The Ice Factor will be open from 10am until 10.15pm.

Private hire and special packages for school groups, office Christmas parties and birthday parties will be provided.
