THE 400th anniversary of Guy Fawkes' failed Gunpowder Plot will be marked across the region with a series of public bonfires and firework displays.

York's official fireworks display is due to start at 5.30pm on Saturday and is set to be visible from across the city centre.

But other events are also being staged in fields, beer gardens and even football clubs across York, North and East Yorkshire.

One of the first, the Junior Reds firework display, will take place tonight at Kit Kat Crescent, home of York City Football Club.

Admission from 6pm will be through the Nestl Family Stand and is open to all. Junior Reds have free entry on

production of their membership card, while adults will pay £2 and children 50p.

The fireworks are due to start at 7pm and are expected to last about 40 minutes. All monies raised through admissions and from a raffle will be ploughed back into the Youth Development Fund.

Another sporting venue will be Acorn Rugby League Club in Thanet Road, Acomb, where a display, along with a mini-fair, stall and refreshments, will take place on Friday, with admission from 6pm. Entry is £1 for adults and children.

The Friends of Alne School are also holding an event on Friday, in a field on Myton Road, just outside Tholthorpe. The bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm, with the fireworks at 7.00pm. Admission is free but with a voluntary collection. Refreshments will be available, with all proceeds going to Alne Primary School.

Heslington Church is staging a bonfire and fireworks on Saturday, with the fire starting at 6.30 pm, and fireworks starting at 7 pm. Admission is from Field Lane. People are urged to go to event by bus rather than car, as no parking facilities. Soup, hot dogs and baked potatoes will be on sale. Admission is £2 for adults, £1 for children.

Selby's bonfire and firework display will take place on the Scott Road field on Saturday, beginning at 6pm. The mayor, Coun John Chambers and Selby MP John Grogan will light the bonfire at 6.30pm,with fireworks due to go off at 7pm. Admission is free but with a voluntary collection in aid of Selby Fire Cadets and Selby War Memorial Hospital.

Bishopthorpe Village Bonfire and firework display will be staged in the beer garden at the Ebor Inn in Main Street at 7pm on Saturday. Bonfire food will be on sale, and there will be a tombola and raffle. Adults entry is £1, while children will pay 50 pence, with proceeds to village organisations.

A bonfire and firework display will be staged on land next to Drakes Garage in Shiptonthorpe at 7pm on Saturday, with adults paying £2.50 and children £1, with under-fives free. Proceeds will help buy instruments for the 1st Market Weighton Boys Brigade marching band.

Follow the instructions

Light at arms length, using a taper

Stand well back

Never go near a firework that has been lit - even if it hasn't gone off, it could still explode.

Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them

Always supervise children around fireworks

Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves

Never give sparklers to children under five

Keep pets indoors
