THE Royal British Legion has launched its annual Poppy Appeal, and, on behalf of the citizens of York, I am honoured to support this most worthy cause.

Last year, the Poppy Appeal raised in excess of £90,000 in the city of York, with the money being spent on welfare schemes, benevolent services, resettlement and work for the disabled.

The amount raised reflects the very hard work and dedication of a large number of voluntary organisers and collectors who raise the bulk of the money.

Over the years the public and businesses in York have given very generously to the appeal.

I do hope that you will continue to give it the support it so rightly deserves.

The Honorary Poppy Appeal Organiser for the city of York is Joe Munday, who is anxious to recruit new collectors, particularly for the street collections.

This year the collections will take place between November 9 and 12.

If you are able to give a little of your time to help with the Poppy Appeal, in any area of the city, please phone Denise Edgar on (01904) 670677 or 07890 640353.

This year, Remembrance Sunday is November 13, and we shall be at the City Cenotaph in Memorial Gardens, Leeman Road, for the annual service.

This is a public service and, as in previous years, I hope it will be well supported.

Councillor Janet Greenwood,

The Rt Hon Lord Mayor of York,

The Mansion House,

York.
