I READ with interest the front page referring to a "rogue builder" ("Ban Him", October 29).

Since moving to York 12 years ago I have had several local trades people in to do maintenance and improvement work on my home. I have always used recommended people and have been very impressed by the standard of work, the honesty of the individuals and the reasonable nature of the prices charged.

With two exceptions, both involving uPVC companies. The first was some ten years ago and involved a well known York company, who subcontracted the building aspects of the work necessary with the actual installation of the uPVC. When I asked why the plastering on the gable end of my house was so uneven and looked rather like unset blancmange I was advised "not to worry, the sun will set that all smooth".

Needless to say, I did worry, especially when the concrete started to fall off. With the help of Trading Standards and the Home Improvement Advisory Service, I quickly got the job re-done.

The other exception is currently the subject of court proceedings so cannot be commented on.

However, it would appear the regulations and standards that apply to the building trade do not apply to uPVC installation. Therefore, anyone can set themselves up as an expert in this area of work without even the most basic knowledge.

City of York Council Trading Standards give support and advice with resulting problems which is second to none, and I would strongly recommend that anyone who has been subjected to shoddy workmanship should contact them for their practical and invaluable advice.
