AS if beleaguered York motorists did not have enough to worry about, today saw the closure of one of the city's busiest roads.

It is no surprise that Gillygate needs to be resurfaced. This street takes a huge pounding from cars, buses and lorries, and is gridlocked for most of the day.

But its repair will see all this traffic seeking other ways through York, which does not bode well for happy motoring.

Drivers are advised to allow more time for their journeys and plan alternative routes carefully. Some Nurofen in the glove compartment and an aromatherapist in the passenger seat might also help.
