LIGHTS and sparklers will illuminate the festive efforts of fundraisers helping the region's cancer patients.

St Leonard's Hospice, in York, has launched its Light Up A Life appeal for 2005, hosted by GNER for the eighth year.

Every light on the Christmas tree on the concourse of York station will shine to honour someone special when the lights are switched on during a short service of dedication on Sunday, December 4, at 3pm.

St Wilfrid's Primary School choir will sing Christmas songs and the York RI Golden Rail Band will play.

A book of honour will be on display throughout the ceremony then on view in the hospice chapel in Tadcaster Road.

The tree will be lit until the Twelfth Night, January 6.

Community fundraiser Judith Wilson said: "Our Light Up A Life Christmas tree is very special to many people.

"The generous support of GNER, who not only host the lighting-up ceremony but also supply the tree and the decorations that surround it, has been one of the major factors in its success.

"We are very grateful to them, as well as to St Wilfrid's School and the York RI Golden Rail Band."

Meanwhile, nurses at the hospice have been getting in the mood for the autumn fair on Bonfire Night.

The fair will be held between 11am and 2pm - 400 years to the day after York man Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament.

Visitors will be able to enjoy home-made cake and craft stalls, refreshments, games and a tombola.

Hospice Christmas cards and calendars will also be on sale.

Judith Wilson said: "The fair offers everyone the chance to buy their Christmas gifts early, or try their luck on the tombola.

"We hope that lots of people will join us on November 5."

To have a light shine on the tree, complete the Light Up A Life coupon or obtain a form from any of the St Leonard's Hospice shops in Acomb, Haxby, Pocklington, Scarcroft Road, York, or Tang Hall, York, the hospice reception or phone the fundraising centre on 01904 777777.
