NEW signing Craig Farrell believes York City Knights can realistically aim for a top-six finish in NL1 next year.

The two promoted teams in 2003 and 2004, Keighley and Barrow, both came straight back down but Farrell, who played in NL1 for Doncaster last season and previously with Hull KR, reckons the Knights can more than break the trend if they stay on the ball.

"To consolidate in NL1 is the goal and we've got a realistic possibility of making the play-offs," he said.

"It's going to be really tough, especially with two teams coming down from Super League but with a couple more signings we're going to be capable of fighting for a top-six spot."

Farrell (pictured right) reckoned increased intensity was the main difference between NL1 and NL2.

"The difference between the top three in NL2 and mid-table in NL1 is not too great but it can be a bit quicker, which is always the case as you progress up any league," he explained.

"The skill levels aren't that different but there is a difference in the speed of thought, reactions and pulling off those skills under pressure."

He added: "In Division Two, you could afford the odd off-day and win. In Division One, if you have an off-day, you're going to get beat.

"If you've prepared well and have the right mentality you can get the points but you've got to be on top of your game every week to grind out results."

York City Knights' Supporters Club are holding a quiz night tomorrow in the Huntington Stadium bar, starting at 7.30pm. Entrance is £1, with a maximum of four per team.
