One of rugby league's stars of the future has put pen to paper for York City Knights.

Bradford Bulls Academy winger Paul Clarke will be a Knight next season after York beat off competition from several other clubs - including Bradford - to sign the 20-year-old junior international.

Assistant coach Jason Ramshaw said: "He's someone we've been looking at for at least the latter part of the season.

"He came to our attention through the Leeds Rhinos link-up. Mick Cook was aware that whenever they played against him, he was always the one causing problems.

"I think there were quite a few NL1 clubs tracking him, including Batley, and we are glad to have him on board."

It is believed the highly recommended youngster had several options open to him, including to stay on at Bradford and battle for a place with the likes of Lesley Vainikolo and Karl Pryce.

Added Ramshaw: "The step up a level is going to benefit him. He's quite ambitious and he wants to develop himself.

"I think he is one for the future. If you look at the other team members that played in that historic academy game against Australia, they are now shining in the Super League, and there's no reason why Paul can't aim for that and achieve it.

"We believe we can give him the coaching he needs to further his game."

Prop David Bates has signed a new contract to stay at Huntington Stadium for another year.

Bates, who is on international duty with Ireland on Sunday ahead of the European Nations Cup, had last season curtailed by a lengthy ban and injury, but will be keen to get a full run in National League One.

Said majority shareholder John Guildford: "It's good news. He showed a lot of promise last season and we need to get him out on the pitch."
