I READ the article "Crossing Crisis" (October 5) with a sense of disgust at the behaviour of some of York's motorists.

Arrogance, impatience, aggression against persons who are trying to provide a safe passage for children; these are not attitudes they were taught when learning to drive, so why display them now?

Is it because they have forgotten or ignore everything they ever learned, or have they just developed into raging idiots who have no consideration for other road users?

According to a council spokeswoman, drivers who fail to respond to crossing patrols are breaking the law and should be prosecuted but, who is there to charge them? The police don't have the resources to monitor every crossing patrol, the community police support officers don't seem to have the authority and the council is deeply involved in a mega-problem over wheelie bins.

Having recently watched the behaviour of motorists at the road works at the Front Street/Green Lane junction in Acomb I am beginning to believe that the ability to read should be included in the driving test.

I would challenge these drivers to take advanced driving guidance and improve their standard of driving and their attitude towards other road users.

A Dobinson,

Askham Lane,

Acomb,

York.
