FORMER Harrogate, Wales and British and Irish Lions hooker Jeff Young has died at the age of 62 following a long illness.
Young was a member of the 1968 Lions team that toured South Africa and won 23 Wales caps from 1968-73.
He was born in Blaengarw, South Wales and played for Bridgend, London Welsh and Harrogate, where he moved after taking up a teaching appointment. During his time at Harrogate he played 25 times for Yorkshire.
He joined the RAF in 1971 and was closely involved in rugby in the force.
He rose to the rank of wing commander and was awarded an OBE for his service to the RAF.
He left in 1991 to take up the post of technical director with the Welsh Rugby Union, which he held until 1996.
After leaving the WRU, Young returned to Yorkshire and spent two years as director of rugby at Harrogate before he moving back into teaching at the Army Foundation College in the town.
