THEY carry a six-foot stick topped by a luminous disc with the word "Stop" emblazoned in black capital letters. Yet the role of the lollipop man or woman appears to be a mystery to certain motorists.

Some seem to think that they step out into the road not to shepherd children to safety, but to provide them with target practise.

It is despicable that aggressive drivers are endangering the lollipop men and women, and their young charges. Until a few of these road-rage idiots are prosecuted and made to pay, it is unlikely that the shortfall in crossing supervisors will be filled.
