MARY Broadhead ("You tell me..." September 19) asks: "Why can't I recycle my Yellow Pages?" The simple answer is that she can.

Old Yellow Pages directories can be recycled across York in recycling banks with Yellow Pages recycling stickers on them when the new 2005/06 edition is delivered next spring.

These banks will be situated at Morrisons, Front Street, Acomb and the Foss Islands Road and Towthorpe Household Waste Sites operational between the end of February and beginning of April 2006.

These recycling sites banks will be run by City of York Council, working with the Yellow Pages Directory Recycling Scheme (YPDRS).

The YPDRS offers grants to local authorities to help set up recycling facilities for old directories. At present, 95 per cent of councils accept Yellow Pages for recycling.

Old Yellow Pages are recycled into a variety of products, including animal bedding, egg boxes, insulation fibre, cardboard, padded envelopes and packaging.

Alternatively, keen recyclers without facilities nearby can shred or scrunch pages of their old Yellow Pages directory for use in their compost heap.
