DOES the city council really think it is being environmentally friendly when, in October, it will force 60,000 households in York to make extra journeys to one of only three centres that take cardboard packaging, once the fortnightly green and grey bin collections come into force?

Has anyone considered the environmental implications of all this extra traffic? Shouldn't the council be encouraging people not to use their cars?

On the flip side, how are people without cars expected to recycle? Most people with families (ourselves included) struggle as it is with a weekly collection and halving it will not help.

More packaging and plastic than garden waste is disposed of by most larger households so why not use the green wheelie bin for plastic and cardboard?

As it stands, this poorly thought-out scheme is totally impractical.

Mrs F Southren-Dale,

Chelwood Walk,

York.
