DAN Potter will cap a wonderful personal month tomorrow when he is crowned the Knights' Player of the Month for August, as voted for by Evening Press readers.

The centre's hat-trick against London and all-important brace against Hunslet not only helped to take York to the LHF National League Two title but also saw him reach 100 career tries.

And his six tries in the month, following his crucial last-gasp score in the top-of-the-table win at Dewsbury on the last day of July, not to mention some sterling all-round performances, have seen him come out on top in the supporters' poll.

This will be the last Player of the Month this season, and it will be presented before tomorrow's game against Workington by fan Linda Thorpe, of York. Everyone who voted went into the hat and Linda's name was drawn out.

There was actually a record number of votes this month - no doubt boosted by the Knights' champion form - with Potter being pushed close by Peter Fox and Yusuf Sozi.

It could get even better for Potter as the three Evening Press/Collier Plant Hire Player of the Year points gleaned from being named Player of the Month has seen him sneak up on the outside in the race for the cash prizes for the top two in the table.

Sozi is also still in the running for a top-two place after his man-of-the-match show in the title-winning match at Hunslet earned him three points, while Potter picked up one more point for being deemed by the Press to be the Knights' third best player that day. The remaining two points went to Sozi's fellow prop, Craig Forsyth.

Full-back Matt Blaymire, desperate to add to his own tally and unfortunate not to after another consistent game at Hunslet, has been joined in second place by Potter. If there is a tie at the end of the season, placings will be decided by who has the most man-of-the-match awards.

Latest standings (leaders only): Sullivan 20pts, Blaymire 14, Potter 14, Sozi 12, Paterson 12, Fox 12, Smith 11, Elston 10, Levy 10, Kirke 7.

DESPITE the Knights' unbeaten, championship-winning form of August, the LHF National League Two Player of the Month award has gone elsewhere, to Swinton Lions' former Huddersfield hooker-cum-back-rower Phil Joseph.
