MANY thanks to Graeme Stanton of City of York Council for providing more details of the ongoing changes to the entrance to York Station.

I hadn't realised the current scheme is actually the same one a council officer telephoned me about as part of a hurried consultation more than a year ago.

However, it is still a poor deal for cyclists. The cycle lanes are significantly below the minimum standard width and there is no facility to help cyclists make the difficult right turn into the station without having to dismount and use the pedestrian crossing.

In fact, for many cyclists the situation will be worse than it was before - the removal of the right-turn lane will force cyclists (and other vehicle users) to block traffic on the inner ring road while they wait for a gap.

The railway station must be one of the most important destinations for cyclists in York. York prides itself on being the UK's top cycling city.

It seems a shame that the best they can do for most cyclists wanting to go to the station is advise them to get off and push.
