NEW plans have been submitted to build plush houses on a former York bowling green.

Cedar Property Developments has put in a new plan to build on the old Ainsty Bowling Club green, behind the Ainsty Hotel in Boroughbridge Road.

The Evening Press reported in April how Cedar originally envisaged a 15-home development, now it has gone back to City of York Council planning chiefs with a 14-building scheme.

The project will see two buildings of five town houses - five four bed and five three bed - and two pairs of semi detached houses, two of which will be four bed and two three bed.

The developers also plan to provide parking for 28 vehicles, 28 cycles and garages, as well as landscaped gardens if the scheme is given the green light.

But the scheme is likely to find opposition from people living near to the green, who protested last time the application was before the council.

More than 30 people signed a petition opposing the development.

The Ainsty Bowling Club has been shut for some two years because it could not attract enough members to carry on.

Since that time, the otherwise derelict green has been used from time to time by the nearby public house for weddings and birthday celebrations.

A consultants' report gathered by Cedar's agent Walker Morris claims the area is "generally in poor condition and has a negative impact on the quality of the local environment".

It has also sought to reassure residents that the "character of the area and reasonable amenities of local residents will be protected".

Meanwhile, a York city centre building could also find itself home to a major new flats development.

London-based developer Belltower Estates has applied to build 34 flats at 2-14 George Hudson Street and 19 Tanner Road.

Both applications are expected to be considered by councillors in the next couple of months.
