YORK City Knights winger Austin Buchanan is to go on loan at Super League club Wakefield until the end of the season, writes Peter Martini.

Nothing has yet been signed but the 21-year-old is training at Belle Vue with a view to securing a contract for next year.

The reigning LHF National League Two Young Player of the Year has only recently returned to fitness after a six-month absence due to a broken arm but he has long been tailed by the Wildcats, who showed interest a year ago.

The fans' favourite would have been a free agent at the end of this season but, now York have secured the NL2 title, they have allowed him to try his luck in the top tier this term.

The Evening Press understands if his trial proves successful, the Knights might be offered a cash-inducing friendly in return. If unsuccessful, he is likely to return to Huntington Stadium.

Buchanan (pictured) began his career under Knights coach Mick Cook at Leeds Rhinos' Academy. He had a brief spell with London Broncos before joining the Knights in May 2004 and scoring 15 tries in 16 appearances. He seemed set to join Super League side Hull at the end of last season before that move fell through and he returned to the Knights, scoring twice in four games in this injury-hit campaign.
