PR Willey (Letters, August 5) has trouble understanding my argument against Mike Bentley's article on the killing of Jean Charles de Menezes.
My complaint boils down to this. It is scandalous that Mr Bentley used allegations which are known to be false, and others which are yet to be verified, to impugn the reputation of an innocent man, and then went on to refer to the fatal shooting of that innocent man as "a public service".
Mr Willey appears not to have noticed that I did mention that there are differing accounts of events leading to Mr Menezes' death. It was Mr Bentley who gave just one version.
Words such as "unfortunate", "tragic" and "mistake" have been applied by media and politicians to Mr Menezes' death. I shudder to imagine what is going in on Mr Bentley's and Mr Willey's heads if they seriously believe it to have been "a public service".
