A YORK company which builds trailers and other vehicles for the Formula One car racing industry is taking on 10 more jobs.

Pocklington Coach Works, in Outgang Lane, Osbaldwick, needs more than its present 40 staff to cope with burgeoning order books taking it to the end of July. And there were hopes today of another contract for six Formula One team trailers which would fill the order book until next January.

Fran Johnson, founder director of the firm says that his trailers, transporters, mobile engineering workshops, hospitality vehicles and outside broadcast trailers for the likes of racing kings Benetton and McLaren boosted turnover last year to £1.8 million.Projected turnover this year is £2.3 million and the estimate for 1999 is £3 million in sales.

"Demand is outweighing supply in our specialised industry and we would rather not be in a position to keep turning work away.

That's why we're recruiting," said Mr Johnson, who started the firm as an accident repair operation with partner Robert Head in 1981.

Two years ago they acquired Derwent Coachworks in Dundas Street, Stonebow, which continues to carry out accident repairs, while the emphasis at Osbaldwick is purely on the manufacture of specialised motor racing vehicles.

Jobs advertised include sheet metal workers, vehicle body builders, welder fabricators, vehicle paint sprayers, pre-paint preparation staff, and a junior accounts clerk plus apprenticeships.
