Acomb retained the Costcutter York and District Senior Indoor Six-a-Side Cricket League Championship when they beat one of their challengers for the title, Rowntree 'A', by 30 runs in their penultimate fixture.

Rowntree, who have seemed likely runners-up for most of the season, were then beaten by Clifton Alliance as their chances of qualifying for the area finals next winter were swept away.

Clifton then moved into second place when they beat Wilberfoss and will be hoping that Acomb beat Dunnington in the final match and leave them as runners-up.

This would give Clifton the opportunity to go one step further than this winter when they were beaten finalists in the Yorkshire Area finals at the Yorkshire Indoor Cricket School after being invited to represent the York and Scarborough Area Council in the Yorkshire finals. Acomb, having won the Leeds area finals fell at the first hurdle in the county competition.

The Rowntree bowlers had done a reasonable containment job as Acomb made 91 off the first ten overs with Richard Sykes making 33 and Scott Nicholls 29no. However Dave Sykes 24, and James Byford 30no then plundered a further 40 runs off the last two overs as Acomb made 131-4.

Rowntree, needing a victory to maintain their challenge, could only reply with 101-4 despite 31no from Richard Tuite and 36no from Andy Tute took 2-17.

The Rowntree batsmen fared badly against Clifton Alliance and were bowled out for 92 with Paul Thorpe 2-13 and Mick Pickering 2-26. Thorpe then led his side to an wicket win with an unbeaten 28.

The likelihood of relegation still haunts Wilberfoss after two further defeats against Dunnington and Clifton.

Kev Davison made 56 in his side's 106 all out against Dunnington for whom Mark Bell took 3-27. Dunnington then went on to win by four wickets as Darren Avey made 28no and Jonathan Simpson 30no.

Davison then took his tally for the day to 101 with an unbeaten 45 against Clifton Alliance. But his efforts wre nullified when Mick Pickering's unbeaten 64 gained Clifton a narrow one wicked win which came with two balls to spare as Pickering gave a fine solo performance to score the final 22 runs on his own off ten deliveries.

In the final game of the day, Dunnington gained a two-wicket victory over Sheriff Hutton Bridge, who made 120-6 as Peter Crowder made 36 and Mike Smith 30. Jonathan Simpson then hit an unbeaten 47 to gain Dunnington's seventh win of the season.Sheriff Hutton Bridge must now win their final game against bottom placed Selby in order to avoid relegation.

Dunnington, on the other hand, cold clinch the runners-up place by beating Acomb in the final game of the campaign. Both these games are to be played next Saturday and will be followed by the first three games in the end of season knock out competition.
