SIMON Appleton is reaping the fruits of his hard labour.

The 21-year-old assistant professional at The York Golf Club has just rounded off a memorable week with qualification for two tournaments, capped by entry to the prestigious Scottish Masters next month.

Appleton's first success was at Catterick Garrison, where he shot a two-over 73 to qualify for the North Yorkshire Classic to be held back at Catterick over 54 holes. He was joined in that final by Fulford GC's Guy Wills, who returned a 74.

But the player, who has been at The York for three years, reeled in an even bigger prize.

With only five places up for grabs in the Sunderland Scotland Masters' qualifier played at Eaglescliffe, near Middlesbrough, Appleton carded a creditable two under par 70, finishing joint second with Selby GC's Marcus Maith also on 70.

Both now go into the Scottish Masters played over 72 holes at the Cawder club in Glasgow from June 16-19.

Enthused Appleton, who these past two days has featured on his first Hippo Tour event in Evesham with first-year professional Jamie Miller of Fulford: "To qualify for the Scottish Masters is a tremendous boost.

"I just need to make that next step up and see whether I am out of my depth or whether I can hack it."

A further lift would be afforded the Wigginton-based Appleton if he could secure sponsorship. His form has not been better, benefiting from assistance given by Tony Mason, the esteemed professional at The York.

"Tony has helped me with my game and at the moment my driving is such that I am not missing many fairways, so I am creating chances." If anyone can provide any backing for Appleton they can contact him at The York, tel 491852.
