PETER Jones, a 16 handicap member of Fulford Golf Club, York, had one of the most remarkable rounds ever seen on the course to win the individual award in a record-breaking annual St Leonard's Hospice tournament.

Jones had eight birdies and an albatross as he finished 11 under par with a net 61, playing to a handicap of five on the day.

And to complete a great day for the Jones family, who own the Four Poster Hotel, in Heslington Road, York, he partnered his wife Judy and Pam Clancy to carry off the team prize with a best of three balls stableford score of 51 points.

"It was just one of those days when everything went right", said Jones.

"I certainly put down a lot of the success to the fact that I was playing with two ladies. I normally play with two or three men and I am nearly always outdriven.

"When you see your playing partners knocking the ball way past yours, the tendency is to have a go to try to keep up with them and you end up making a mess of things.

"But Judy and Pam are more gentle drivers, although very accurate I must add, and this seemed to encourage me to make a better swing. My approach play was more accurate then usual and I never had to hole a putt of more than six feet to score points. The only one I missed was at the long 11th when I failed to tap one in from 12 inches."

Highlight of the round was a gross three, albatross nett two, at the sixth, Fulford's longest hole of 561 yards.

"I drove off the tee with a driver I borrowed from Michael Hessay, our club assistant professional, then hit my own driver, which has a slightly higher loft on the club face, before pitching straight into the hole with a nine iron from 110 yards," said Jones. That feat alone was enough to pick up five points on the hole.

He totalled 47 stableford points to run away with the Peter Langron Trophy, five points ahead of nearest rival Gerry Pickard (Selby), last year's winner, who looked like carrying off the trophy again when he led the record 192 strong field for a long time until Jones, one of the later starters, came in with his phenomenal round.

His wife Judy had 35 stableford points and Pam Clancey 34 and they combined to take the team prizes with 51 points, one better than two other teams.

Mike Gibson won the division one individual prize with 40 points, having a better back six of 13 to Andy Robson's 12. Pickard took the division two award with 42 points, while Jean Howdall won the ladies prize with 40.

The record-breaking day was capped by the announcement that the tournament had raised £7,701 beating last year's record of £6,617 for Hospice funds.

Fulford have staged a tournament for this charity since 1981 and in the region of £80,000 has been passed on to St Leonard's Hospice.

l Joy Hunter, a member of The York Golf Club, won the Northern Counties Veterans' Women's Championship at Gosforth, beating Iris Bracken (Lancashire) 5 and 4 in the final.
