Six teams of young people, aged between 10 and 16, took part.

The Easingwold team of Abbi Wright, Louise Wagstaff and Vicky Harley won the event and received a trophy. The team had to cover a number of show jumps and then take part in a cross country exercise.

Other teams came from St Peter's, St Olave's, the Minster School, Joseph Rowntree School and Bootham School.

Last year the Easingwold team won the senior competition at the same event.

York Sixth Form College have been drawn away to Wyke College in the first round of the Daily Mail Schools' Under-18 Cup rugby union competition. Harrogate Grammar School are at home to Prince Henry's of Otley. Northallerton College are at home to Whitby Community College. The first round is due to be completed by September 23.

The first hat-trick of the new football season has been scored by Matthew Hrycaiczuks (Copmanthorpe) in their 9-1 trouncing of St Barnabas in a Primary League match.

Will all primary schools note that Judith Fitzgerald is no longer in charge of soccer at Dringhouses Primary School. Her place has been taken by Christopher Connor.

Team managers have held their first City Boys' trials and they have all arranged to hold a second one.

The next Under-11s trial will be on Saturday, September 19, at the All Saints playing field, Simbalk Lane.

It is hoped that more primary schools will send their best players along to this one, as only 18 boys attended the first trial.

The North Yorkshire Schools' U16 trial was being held this afternoon at the All Saints playing fields, starting at 1pm.

The overall winners of the Parents' Five-a-Side were Lakeside, York's newest Primary School, who entered this year for the first time.

Lakeside drew 0-0 with St Alered's in the semi-finals and won 4-1 on penalties. In the final they beat Haxby Road 1-0.

Manor School has only one team in the York Schools' Football League at Under-16 level but they have a team in each of the cup competitions. All age groups have a full programme of friendly games between now and the end of term. Manor play soccer up to Christmas and the following term they concentrate on playing rugby league.

Huntington School pairs won both the Under 16 Boys and Girls York Schools badminton tournaments.

The top nine girls placings were: 1 Sally Crossley and Lorraine Battle (Huntington), 2 Louisa Douglas and Katie Graver (Huntington), 3 Jenny Ryall and Hayley Winter (Brayton), 4 Sally Bugon and Sarah Hick (Lowfield), 5 Pippa Boothroyd and Hayley Parker (Millthorpe), 6 Melanie Dobbin and Gianna Chadwick (Huntington), 7 Carina Green and Gemma Wigdahl (Millthorpe), 8 Angela Hetherton and Helen Garnham (Huntington), 9 Hannah Ford and Rachel Christopherson (Manor).

York Under 16s began their rugby league campaign with a 28-16 victory Scarborough on Saturday.

Full back Paul Day (Oaklands) had a fine attacking game scoring two tries and his brace was matched by pacy centre Johnny Waldron (Oaklands), who scored one long range try, outpacing the whole Scarborough defence.

The forwards played well and Danny Wilks (Barlby High) and Matthew Corr (Oaklands) made some storming runs but the pick of the forwards was Paul Payne (All Saints).

He made some 'big hits' and scored two tries, one of which he achieved after ripping the ball from a Scarborough player some 20 metres from the Scarborough line.

The squad played well but mention must be made of Richard Scott (Oaklands) whose defence was exceptional.

The next match is on October 3 at home to Gateshead.

The York and District Schools' U15 Rugby League team plays their second match of the season on Saturday, October 3, when they take on Gateshead at home.
