Columnists need not only be thick-skinned and insensitive as Bryan Marlow pointed out in Turpin's defence (Readers Letters, November 3), they can be plain thick as evidenced by the ill-conceived ramblings of Peter Mullen over too many years.

His new appointment ministering to the City' financial sector is as appropriate as it is disturbing.

When economists discuss worrying trends, do you suppose it's a reference to Prophet Profit beckoning moneylenders back into the temple?

I'm sorry but I can't join in all this weeping and wailing over Peter's departure. Far too many readers have written in telling him what a fab columnist he's been, which, frankly, was irresponsible of you Bryan. Truly a prophet has honour in Otterwood Lane. Meanwhile, I would be most interested in any further insights that Mr Marlow can confer on the question of being thick-skinned and long-winded.
