Mr Clarke (Letters, March 17) is a little late with his suggestion to build a canal with an outlet to the East Coast to alleviate the flooding of the River Derwent.
I have a book on the Derwent in which an article is reproduced from The Yorkshire Weekly Post dated 1891.
It describes the New Cut which runs from Everly village in Forge Valley to enter the sea at Scalby Mill. The Cut still exists and is shown on Ordnance maps. It didn't appear to work this time - perhaps someone forgot to open the flood gate.
