Mukarrab, who has enjoyed a wonderful winter on the sand, can resume winning ways on the turf at Newcastle tomorrow.

The David Chapman-trained gelding bids for the featured £10,000 Coral Sprint Showcase Handicap and can make the most of his featherweight under Lindsay Charnock.

Thanks to a highly successful stint on the all-weather, the much-improved Mukarrab has risen in the ratings to a mark of 86, but he is considerably better handicapped on turf and tomorrow will race off a mark of just 49 - 37lb lower.

If he translates his sand form to turf, Mukarrab looks a handicap certainty in this five furlongs, though I doubt it will turn out to be quite that simple.

Tom Tun, another who races off a more favourable mark on turf than sand, should turn in a bold bid, while Unshaken and Kieren Fallon also make appeal. But Mukarrab is the one they've all got to beat.

Jack Berry, who is in his final year as a trainer before he hands over to his son Alan, got off the mark with the juvenile Singsong at Doncaster on Saturday.

Red Sun could be another two-year-old winner for the Cockerham trainer in the European Breeders Fund Maiden Stakes.

Reported to have been shaping up well at home, Gary Carter's mount will certainly have been well schooled.

Mark Johnston, fresh from his wonderful success with Fruits of Love in the Dubai Turf Classic yesterday, can add to his scoresheet with Forum Girl in the Ramside Event Catering Maiden Stakes.

Although she failed to see a racecourse last season, Forum Girl has reportedly been shaping up nicely at home and it is significant that Johnston won this race 12 months ago with White Heart.

Richard Quinn, who won Saturday's Lincoln Handicap on Right Wing, has been booked by Mick Easterby to take the ride on Cinder Hills in the St Modwen Handicap, and the hint should be taken.

Cinder Hills, who was in excellent form on the Flat this time last year, is fit from hurdling and can make a bold bid in this essentially modest event.

Newcastle also stages a couple of races over jumps and course winner Weaver George can defy top weight in the Polyflor Handicap Chase after his luckless defeat at Ayr last time.

Micky Hammond has his horses in better form now and the Middleham trainer can hit the target with Ryalux in the Northern Racing Novices' Hurdle. The six-year-old has finished runner-up on both his starts to date and can make it third time lucky.

At Sandown, Paul Nicholls can keep up the momentum in his quest to win the National Hunt trainers' championship.

The Somerset handler has excellent prospects with Dines in the Summit Conference & Meetings Novices' Chase, while the likewise consistent Irbee also boasts a fine chance in the Mousetrap Challenge Cup Novices' Chase.
