Every house in York was due to receive free bus timetables today in a council effort to get people out of their cars.

Booklets containing a map of York and bus timetables were being distributed as part of the Council's TravelWise campaign to make people aware of how easy it is to get around York without using a car.

The authority is planning to publish the guides in April and October every year.

The guide follows the launch of the Council's "Businfo" telephone helpline, which was set up last year. The helpline (01904 551400) is open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 2pm on Sundays.

Councillor Dave Merrett, chair of the council's planning and transport committee, said: "Last week the Government published its vision for the future role of buses within an integrated transport network. It stressed that good timetable information is a foundation stone of successful public transport. I am delighted that we are able to provide every household in York with information about their local bus services."
