P&J LOGAN (Letters, March 27) suggests the conditions of the River Derwent could be improved.

C R Smith (Letters, March 25) informs us that the sea cut which comes out at Scalby Mills is more than100 years old and perhaps the facility can be redesigned to take more water when required.

There is a set weir at Kirkham Abbey of about ten feet high and a smaller adjustable sluice.

Having both adjustable could be beneficial in lowering the river volume quickly as thawing occurs or as heavy rains begin. The River Hertford joins the Derwent near to Sherburn/Ganton and it may be possible to use it as an extra sea outlet facility towards Cayton Bay or the Wyke. A one to two mile tunnel or pipeline being needed to reach the sea.

Could the Environmental Agency let us know if they are going to produce a detailed study of the Derwent for public inspection?
