Breast cancer is a scourge of the modern age. It claims the lives of thousands of women every year. Even with advances in medicine, we are a long way from finding a cure.

Effective treatments can only be developed with the help of volunteers. Tadcaster mother Alison Mason has shown great courage in agreeing to take part in the trial of a new treatment involving intense chemotherapy. She believed it gave her the best chance to beat the disease and see her four-year-old son grow up.

Alison has now been clear of cancer for 20 months and is positive about her future. For her sake, and for that of countless other women, we hope this means the trial has proved a success.
