Railway operator Northern Spirit's newly-appointed trading director, Nigel Patterson, does not always let the train take the strain, preferring to commute from Blackpool to York by car each day.

A deer for all seasons: In addition to the high-protein meat of the red deer, other bits and pieces are exported to Far Eastern markets for aphrodisiac purposes.

"However, I mix and match my journey with train and car, depending whichever is more convenient or quicker," he said.

For the last eight years Mr Patterson was chief operating operator with Welcome Break, a motorway service station operator. He is now part of a major shake-up in management implemented last month by Northern Spirit - a subsidiary of Liverpool-based MTL - in a bid to improve service to customers. New positions of regional directors were created, replacing the posts of general managers.
