Ten years ago, anyone visiting York on a Sunday found that it was shut.

Outdated laws kept the shops shuttered all day and the pubs closed all afternoon.

Fortunately, the restrictions have been lifted. As a result York is now a lively place to be on a Sunday.

And thanks York Racecourse, Sunday is about to become more exciting still.

Most racing at Knavesmire takes place midweek. Racegoers take time off work to attend, along with the business men and women being entertained by corporate sponsors.

Next year for the first time races will be run on a Sunday.

This is an excellent decision which will be particularly popular with families.

Racecourse chiefs have pledged to alter admission prices with this in mind.

It could become one of the best family days out of the new Millennium.
