Is this the property bargain of the year? A little corner of Clifton Moor is on offer for just £5,000.

Bill and Christine Darlington, who are offering to sell their newsagents shop at a knockdown price

Sadly for home-seekers, the property's not a house - but it could be just the ticket for a fledgling businessman or woman.

Tower Court News is valued at £29,000 - but it's yours for a sixth of the asking price.

Owners Bill and Christine Darlington, from Green Dike, Wigginton, are offering the business at a knockdown price because they are so desperate to set off on their journey of a lifetime. They are planning a year-long trip, including a tour of Australia and New Zealand, but the business has been a major stumbling block for the past three years.

They bought the shop eight years ago, developed it into a thriving concern and cannot understand why it hasn't been snapped up.

They already have the savings to fund the trip but need someone to take over the 25-year lease on the shop before they go - hence the £5,000 price tag.

Bill, 52, said: "I suppose it's like someone standing on a street corner giving fivers away, you think there's got to be some catch but there isn't. There's nothing wrong with it. We thought long and hard about whether we should sit on the price because by reducing it considerably people tend to think there's something wrong with it. This could provide a once in a lifetime opportunity for a budding or experienced entrepreneur."

He said he and his wife wanted to take a life-enhancing trip after his mother died of cancer and a friend died of a brain haemorrhage within a short period of time.

Bill and Christine have their visas sorted and will leave their house in the care of their 23-year-old daughter Helen.
