Demoted defender Barry Jones has been told he can leave York City - in the same breath as netting big praise from manager Neil Thompson.
Barry jones can leave Bootham Crescent
The City boss said that with the arrival of centre-back Mark Sertori, he had told Jones he could not guarantee him a regular senior slot.
"I felt we needed a big centre-half, so I have said if he finds another club we will let him go. He is available on a free at the end of the season anyway and I cannot guarantee him first-team football," said Thompson.
But the City manager has been thrilled by response of the Liverpool-born Jones, who last season creditably skippered City, though last Saturday was replaced at Rotherham by Sertori.
Added Thompson: "Jones said he would give 100 per cent whenever he was needed. He will still be involved because he is a great lad who has given himself the best chance.
"I cannot ask more of him and I would give him a glowing reference."
